Celebrate National Black Philanthropy Month
National Black Philanthropy Month, an annual month-long, global celebration of African-descent giving, was created in August 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet) and is held every August. It serves as an invitation to all African American communities and their allies to reflect on and promote the power of giving to transform lives. The month, also, highlights the contributions of black organizations and promotes increased financial support and sustainability for those initiatives. A closer look at philanthropy overall, shows that African Americans donate a larger share of their income to charities than any other group in the nation. Moreover, despite the racial wealth gap, African Americans give at a higher rate, even though their family median household income is almost $20,000 less than all other families in America, according to the Brookings Institution.
In addition to Black Philanthropy Month, National Black Giving Day (August 28) has been organized to showcase and support this dynamic. Giving to organizations that aim at improving the quality of life of the African American community, not only enhances their ability operate and grow, but also creates the opportunity of increased political imagination for communities and fosters self-sufficiency in individuals that have been long marginalized and excluded in many ways from wealth building. This August we choose to celebrate all of these forces. Join us for one of our many events throughout National Black Philanthropy Month with support from the Griffith Family Foundation and the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.
